Press release //For immediate release

Partial reopening of housing starts: Strict and clear rules will have to be followed according to the FTQ-Construction and Inter

Montreal, April 13, 2020 — The Legault government has announced that, effective April 20, home construction will be reopened. The FTQ-Construction and the Provincial Council (International) will monitor the situation closely. The partial reopening of the construction sites will allow the applicability of the new rules to be verified before a gradual and complete reopening.

Health and safety, our priority

Both unions had called for the closure of construction sites because of the glaring lack of sanitary measures and the difficulty of applying social distance in construction. While a guide to best practices has just been published, both organizations would like to reiterate the importance of ensuring that the reopening will take place by putting in place concrete measures to strictly respect the physical distance of 2 meters. In addition, severe penalties, up to and including the closure of a construction site, will have to apply on recalcitrant construction sites.

"It's time to check how to work with COVID-19. Construction is a workplace that is already at risk for health and safety. It will be important to apply the rules from the outset so that construction does not become a place where the virus spreads. We want to contribute to the economic recovery, but not to the cost of our health. Eric Boisjoly, Managing Director of the FTQ-Construction.

"We recognize the importance of home building and our workers as well, but the health of them and their families will always be a priority. That is why we will be very attentive to respecting the rules of hygiene, hand washing and social distance. We also hope that the government will take action against contractors who are breaking the rules. This is the only way to make this partial recovery a success. Michel Trépanier, President of the Provincial Council (International).

Thank you Canadian Conference International Vice President Paul Faulkner for providing the press release translation.
